Clicking an ad or a link in a newsletter often takes us to a page that asks for one thing only: buy, sign up or download something. That is the landing page, one of the key elements of online customer acquisition.

What is a landing page?

A landing page is a single web page with one goal: turning the visitor into an engaged lead and later a customer. It often asks for contact details and gives something valuable in return: a prize game, a downloadable resource, a discount or a free consultation.

Why do you need a landing page if you have a website?

Because there is less noise. On a website a lot of content, messages and links compete for the visitor's attention; a landing page is optimised for one message and one action, so it converts better. And every visitor costs money: you either paid for an ad or created content to bring them. The investment pays off if the conversion is good enough.

What are the 7 elements every successful landing page needs?

  1. A strong headline. Visitors decide in a few seconds whether to stay. A good headline makes the offer clear at once.
  2. An image that shows the offer. An image that suits the audience shows the offer or the feeling it creates.
  3. Benefits. Short and convincing: why accepting the offer is a good decision, and what to do. Address the visitor directly.
  4. Search optimisation. The keywords of the audience and the ad in the copy, an easy-to-scan structure, complete meta data. This brings better rankings and lower ad costs.
  5. A call to action (CTA) visible without scrolling. A one- or two-word, high-contrast button: Sign me up! Download! Buy now!
  6. No outbound links. The page's only goal is conversion, so remove every distraction: navigation, links to other pages, even your own social links.
  7. A short form. The less data you ask for, the more people fill it in. If you need more, split it into steps and say everywhere why you are asking. Mind GDPR: a precise purpose and explicit consent. After submitting comes a thank-you page with the promised download or another relevant offer.

+1: How can A/B testing increase conversion?

Many small details affect conversion, and you cannot know in advance what each change will do. In an A/B test two or more versions of the page are shown at the same time to parts of the audience, and the better-performing version goes on to run in the full campaign. You can test a single element, such as the headline or the button text, or the structure of the whole page.
