What determines the cost of web development?

"How much does a website cost?" The only honest answer is: it depends. This article shows what it depends on: the factors that influence the cost of web development most, and how to get an accurate proposal.

What influences the cost most?

  • Scope: how many pages, content types, features and user roles. This is the biggest factor.
  • Custom design: a ready-made template, a template with custom elements, or fully custom UX and UI design with user research.
  • Business logic: a presentation site is different from an ordering or approval process, a calculator or a customer portal.
  • Integrations: ERP, CRM, payment system, internal database. Every connection needs design, development and testing, and coordination with the other system's vendor.
  • Content and migration: who writes the copy, who creates the images, and how much content has to be moved from the old site.
  • Languages: multilingual support means extra work in content management and testing.
  • Quality requirements: security, performance, accessibility, search optimisation.
  • Deadline: a tight deadline needs a larger team or parallel work.

Why do proposals differ so much?

Because developers understand the same request differently. If the request does not describe the scope precisely, one bidder prices the minimum and another the complete, well-working solution. The cheaper proposal then often gets more expensive during the project. It is worth checking what each proposal includes item by item and asking what has been left out.

What to consider beyond the price?

The total cost of ownership. Besides building it, operations, updates and further development cost money too. A well-designed, maintainable system can be cheaper in the long run than a quickly assembled solution that has to be rewritten in two years.

How can you get an accurate proposal?

With a good request for proposal that describes the goals, the scope and the constraints. For complex projects it is worth starting with scoping: in a few weeks we collect the requirements, sketch the main processes and screens, and turn them into a fixed-price proposal. The discovery needed for a proposal is free with us, and the scoping fee is credited to the project if we continue.
